Prisoners’ Media Office: Starvation used to extract confessions in Israeli prisons

QUDS, June 23 (YPA) – The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office revealed on Tuesday that a number of Palestinian detainees have been subjected to deliberate starvation during periods of military interrogation, with some reportedly being denied food for a week or more as part of systematic pressure aimed at extracting confessions before their transfer to Nafha Israeli Prison.

In a statement, the office said that the use of food deprivation as an interrogation method constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, describing it as cruel and inhumane treatment prohibited under international law. It called for an urgent international investigation and accountability for those responsible.

The office also reported that detainees at Nafha Prison are facing harsh detention conditions, including repeated punitive measures, restrictions on religious practices, and collective penalties affecting all prisoners, among them a policy of systematic starvation.

According to the statement, cases of scabies and skin allergies have spread among detainees amid alleged medical neglect and poor sanitation conditions inside the prison, exacerbating health concerns and increasing risks to prisoners’ well-being.

The office further added that prison authorities impose strict limits on access to recreation yards, provide low-quality meals, and require prisoners to share shaving tools, raising concerns about the spread of disease.

It clarified that prison suppression units continue to conduct raids on prison sections and use gas and batons against detainees, describing the measures as part of an escalating campaign affecting various aspects of prisoners’ daily lives.
