Algeria calls for high-level meeting of Security Council on situation in Palestine

NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (YPA) – Algeria called on Saturday for holding a high-level meeting of the Security Council on the situation in Palestine on the sidelines of the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly.

Algeria, through its Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Benjamaa, in a speech he delivered during a Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, stressed the urgent need for decisions supported by follow-up and accountability mechanisms in order to ensure their implementation.

Benjamaa emphasized Algeria’s conviction of the necessity of imposing peace on all those who reject it and do not believe in it.

He called for “taking a serious and clear stance regarding the deteriorating situation in the region.”

In this context, Benjamaa stated that “the greatest mission of the Security Council is to maintain international peace and security,” indicating that the seriousness of the situation in the Middle East requires quick and decisive action.

Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations expressed his dissatisfaction with Tel Aviv’s impunity, its permanent disavowal of previous agreements, and its continued violation of international law, which is the basis for the establishment of civilized societies.

It is worth noting that the United Nations General Assembly had adopted, on Wednesday, by an overwhelming majority, a draft resolution demanding that Israel withdraw from the occupied Palestinian territories within a year.
