MUKALLA, Oct. 21 (YPA) – Powerful explosions rocked Al-Rayyan Airport in Mukalla, Hadramout province, earlier on Wednesday. The airport was converted into a joint US military base in 2016.
A local source familiar with the incident said the airport, which has been closed to civilian flights since 2016, was reportedly targeted by unidentified drones that struck Saudi weapons depots and military equipment. The explosions came hours after attacks by Sanaa forces.
The source added the blasts were also felt in Shihr, east of Mukalla, and suggested they may have been caused by explosions at weapons and ammunition depots.
Sanaa forces had previously targeted weapons depots and military equipment transported to the airport by Saudi Arabia aboard cargo planes, according to the report.
Saudi Arabia took control of the airport in early January following the end of the UAE’s role in the coalition.
