Mosques in Mukalla begin Prophet’s birthday celebrations amid local tensions

MUKALLA, Aug. 15 (YPA) – Mosques in Mukalla city, the provincial capital of Hadramout governorate, which is under Saudi control in eastern Yemen, have launched a series of religious lectures and gatherings to mark the anniversary of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday (Mawlid al-Nabawi) for the year 1448 AH, drawing large crowds of local residents.

The opening gathering took place on Friday evening at the Al-Rawdah Mosque in Mukalla, attended by Islamic scholars and preachers. The event featured recitations of the Prophet’s life and virtues, accompanied by traditional religious hymns.

During their addresses, scholars emphasized the importance of commemorating the Prophet’s biography, following his teachings, and reflecting his moral principles in daily life.

Organizers stated that the religious gatherings and Mawlid commemorations will continue across Mukalla, its surroundings, and the Hadramout Valley throughout the Islamic month of Rabi’ al-Awwal.

The observances come amid reports of rising opposition from local conservative Salafi groups toward Sufi scholars and traditional organizers, with critics attempting to restrict the gatherings on theological grounds, deeming them religiously non-sanctioned practices (Bid’ah).

The celebration of the Prophet’s birthday anniversary remains a long-standing religious and cultural tradition in Yemen, including Hadramout, where communities have commemorated the occasion for centuries.
