LONDON, March 12 (YPA) – The British destroyer HMS Dragon has departed the port of Portsmouth heading to the eastern Mediterranean to reinforce the United Kingdom’s defensive capabilities in the region amid rising security tensions.
The move is part of broader British military measures that included deploying AW159 Wildcat helicopters specialized in counter-drone operations from RNAS Yeovilton, along with the arrival of a Merlin Mk2 helicopter in Cyprus after departing from RNAS Culdrose in Cornwall.
The destroyer will rely on the Sea Viper missile system to counter aerial threats, including drones, while receiving support from helicopters of the 815 Naval Air Squadron equipped with Martlet missile designed for anti-drone missions.
The deployment comes as London reports continued attacks targeting its interests in the region and coincides with additional military reinforcements, including radar and air-defense systems as well as F-35 Lightning II aircraft already conducting air-defense operations.
The Royal Navy operates six type 45 destroyer vessels based in Portsmouth. Each carries a crew of about 200 sailors and serves as a primary line of defense against aerial threats such as aircraft, missiles, and drones.
