NEW YORK, Jan. 27 (YPA) – The United States has begun efforts to end the mandate of the United Nations Mission to Support the Hodeida Agreement (UNMHA) on Yemen’s western coast, according to diplomatic sources.
Media reports citing Western diplomats said Washington has submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council calling for the termination of UNMHA’s tasks, arguing that current conditions have surpassed the mission’s original framework and objectives.
The sources indicated that the draft proposes a short-term extension of the mission for two months, after which UNMHA would be merged into the Office of the UN Special Envoy to Yemen, effectively ending its on-the-ground presence by March. Previous US attempts to push through a similar proposal reportedly failed months earlier.
UNMHA was established by the United Nations in 2019, during a peak in military confrontations, with the aim of monitoring the Hodeida ceasefire, separating Sanaa forces from Saudi-led coalition-backed factions, and overseeing inspection and de-escalation measures.
The mission was credited with contributing to a relative reduction in hostilities in the strategic port city.
