MARIB, July 29 (YPA) – Salafist cleric Wasel Abadi said he survived an assassination attempt by unknown gunmen early Tuesday in Marib city, which is controlled by Saudi-backed factions.
Abadi said he narrowly escaped a heavy barrage of gunfire fired at him by unidentified assailants while he was on his way to perform the Al-Fajr (dawn) prayer in Marib.
The claims came after Abadi sparked controversy by alleging in a Friday sermon that security forces affiliated with the Islah Party had tortured civilians in Marib.
Local sources in Marib said Abadi’s accusations have raised tensions between Salafist groups and Islah-affiliated authorities in the city.
