Gas filling stations shut down across Aden amid severe shortage

ADEN, Sept. 12 (YPA) – Gas filling stations in the Saudi-controlled city of Aden closed completely on Friday, refusing to serve motorists amid an unprecedented gas shortage that has gripped the city since the beginning of the year.

The Aden Gas Company said the shortage had affected all districts of the city due to disruptions in gas supplies from Safar in Marib. It attributed the delays to tribal ambushes and road blockades along the route through Al-Abr, Shabwa and Abyan, all of which are under Saudi control.

The crisis comes amid what has been described as a deliberate escalation following the STC’s call in May for popular action to end Saudi tutelage. Basic services and living conditions in Aden and other southern and eastern Yemeni provinces have continued to deteriorate since 2016.

The gas company in Safar, which is controlled by the Islah party, recently cut daily gas supplies by 6,000 barrels, equivalent to 20 tanker loads, further worsening the crisis in Aden and other southern provinces.

The price of a gas cylinder has risen to more than 22,000 Yemeni riyals, as the city also faces prolonged power outages and worsening living conditions.
