Sanaa appeals to UNESCO to halt vandalism at ‘Bilqis Mahram’ in Marib

SANAA, Dec. 23 (YPA) – The General Organization for Antiquities and Museums (GOAM) in Sanaa has condemned what it described as systematic destruction at the Bilqis “Mahram” site (Awwam Temple) in Marib Governorate by unauthorized individuals and antiquity looters.

In an official statement, the organization issued an urgent appeal to UNESCO to intervene and stop the vandalism, noting that the temple is currently inscribed on the World Heritage List.

The GOAM called on all parties to uphold their national and historical responsibilities and to raise awareness regarding the preservation of the country’s heritage from destruction and looting.

The statement noted that Bilqis Mahram houses an ancient epigraphic library containing hundreds of Musnad inscriptions. According to the GOAM, these artifacts have been subjected to uprooting and smuggling due to what it characterized as “deliberate neglect” by the local authorities in Marib.

The GOAM appealed to local residents in Marib to intervene and stop the tampering that has damaged the sanctuary. It urged the restoration of the site’s iron perimeter fence, the restriction of unauthorized public access, and the prosecution of those involved in the theft of antiquities.
