Spain to file complaint with ICC over “Sumud Flotilla” incidents
MADRID, Oct. 06 (YPA) – Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska announced that his country will take a preemptive step by submitting a complaint to the International Criminal Court (ICC) regarding the events surrounding the “Global Sumud Flotilla.”
Grande-Marlaska stated that “any aggression against individuals in international waters constitutes deprivation of liberty under both domestic and international law.”
The rights of the flotilla participants were systematically violated. They were reportedly denied access to medication, water, and sanitation facilities.
Furthermore, lawyers were not informed when immigration authorities began holding hearings. After a delay of more than nine hours, legal teams only learned of the proceedings after activists initiated contact with them.
The occupying Israeli authorities also transported participants from Ashdod port to Ktsiot Prison in the Negev and began court hearings without notifying the legal team or ensuring any legal representation. Lawyers are currently attending the court sessions where detention orders—allowing for custody until deportation—are being reviewed.
