SANAA, Feb. 2 (YPA) – The United Nations Human Rights Office said on Friday there were “strong doubts” whether three Bahraini opposition leaders had received a fair trial after the Supreme Court upheld the sentences this week for life imprisonment for spying for Qatar.
Sheikh Ali Salman, secretary-general of the now-banned opposition al-Wefaq association, Sheikh Hassan Sultan and Ali al-Aswad, members of the same association, were sentenced to life in prison in last November, overturning a previous acquittal.
Al-Wefaq played a leading role in 2011 uprising in Bahrain and the Shiite majority complained of discrimination and human rights abuses against them.
