ADEN, Jan. 16 (YPA) –At least one militiaman was killed in deadly clashes that broke out at dawn on Wednesday between the Saudi-led coalition’s rival militias in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden, local sources told Yemen Press Agency.
According to the sources, the clashes took place in Mansourah district between gunmen and coalition-backed security forces.
The clashes reportedly broke out when the so-called Aden security forces tried to expel gunmen from the so-called Cairo police station following the appointment of a new security director.
The gunmen then surrounded the police and shot at them, one of the sources said.
The Aden Security Department issued a decision appointing a new police director recently, who immediately expelled a number of soldiers who took over police duties up until then, as well as following the complaints of citizens against them, a coalition-backed security official quoted as saying by “Aden al-Ghad” Newspaper.
Security forces loyal to the exiled Hadi government intervened and exchanged fire with the gunmen, leading to the death of one called Abu Bakr al-Saqqaf, a soldier in the security forces.
The security sources said that the troops fighting captured five of the attackers and chased five others out of the area.
“The attack comes as a part of the security chaos in Aden and other occupied provinces in the south of Yemen, which has allowed armed militants to reinforce their positions in areas nominally under Saudi or Emirati control.
