ISLAMABAD, June 21 (YPA) – Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif departed for Bürgenstock, Switzerland, on Sunday accompanied by Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir, to participate in talks focused on implementing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between Washington and Tehran.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said senior delegations from Iran, Qatar, and the United States are also expected to attend the discussions, describing them as the first official engagement since the signing of the memorandum.
The ministry said Pakistan remains committed to supporting the implementation of the understandings reached between Iran and the United States, adding that Sharif is expected to hold separate meetings with the participating delegations to reaffirm Islamabad’s support for dialogue and regional stability.
The statement highlighted Pakistan’s role in facilitating previous rounds of US-Iran talks, saying its diplomatic efforts contributed to the negotiations that culminated in the Islamabad agreement.
Meanwhile, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance expressed confidence that the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran would hold, while Iranian state media reported that an Iranian delegation led by parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf had arrived in Switzerland for talks with U.S. officials.
The memorandum reached in mid-June includes provisions related to a ceasefire across multiple fronts, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the easing of certain economic restrictions on Iran, and measures aimed at supporting economic recovery and regional stability.
