Fierce clashes outbreak in Aden following appointment of new “Coast Guard” commander

ADEN, June 21 (YPA) – Violent armed clashes erupted on Sunday in the vicinity of the Radio and Television headquarters and the “Coast Guard” building in the Tawahi district of Aden in southern Yemen.

The confrontations, which took place between pro-Saudi factions and elements affiliated with the “dissolved” UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), concluded with the seizure of the military camp amid a heavy military deployment of armored vehicles.

Informed sources reported that the armed confrontations flared up following the absolute rejection by forces loyal to the “dissolved” STC of a decision to appoint a new commander for the so-called “Coast Guard”—a figure loyal to the head of the “Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi”—and their insistence on retaining their former commander.

In response, the so-called commander of the “Fourth Region,” Salafist “Hamdi Shukri Al-Subaihi,” ordered the storming of the building by force to impose the new appointment. This triggered clashes between the pro-Saudi “Al-Amaliqa” (Giants) and the so-called “Military Police” factions on one side, and factions of the “dissolved” STC on the other.

Local residents confirmed hearing heavy gunfire that caused widespread panic among citizens. No official casualty or material damage figures have been disclosed yet, amid mounting demands from local residents to remove military camps and gunmen from residential neighborhoods.
