Foreign rivalries fuel tensions in Hadramout amid air threats

HADRAMOUT, June 07 (YPA) – Hadramout province in eastern Yemen is witnessing heightened tensions amid conflicting reports regarding a second drone-related incident targeting the residence of Presidential Leadership Council member and the province’s governor, Salem Al-Khanbashi.

Political observers said the incident has sparked debate over its implications, with some linking it to efforts to justify an expanded foreign military and security presence in the region.

Analysts argued that Saudi Arabia is seeking to strengthen air defense capabilities along Hadramout’s Arabian Sea coastline, reportedly with support from foreign military experts, amid concerns over regional security threats and developments affecting maritime security.

According to these assessments, the moves are part of broader efforts to secure strategic infrastructure, including the potential resumption of oil exports through the Al-Dhabba Oil Terminal, which has remained largely inactive since late 2022, as well as the protection of key military and economic interests in eastern Yemen.

The renewed reports surrounding Al-Khanbashi have also revived speculation about tensions among regional actors, particularly following his previous public remarks regarding military developments in the province .

Observers further noted that ongoing security incidents and assassinations in parts of the Hadramout Valley are being cited as justification for increased security measures and military deployments, amid broader regional tensions related to maritime security and developments involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.
