BEIRUT, Jan. 17 (YPA) – The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said the Israeli occupation army fired about 30 rounds at one of its positions near Kfar Shuba in southern Lebanon on Friday, with no injuries reported.
“An Israeli army Merkava tank, positioned south of the Blue Line, fired around 30 small-caliber rounds at a UNIFIL position near Kfar Shuba,” the UN force said in a statement.
“The shots hit a sentry post, and one of the projectiles penetrated one of the post’s living quarters, probably after ricocheting. Fortunately, the occupant was not present at the time of the impact and no injuries were reported,” the statement read.
“Any action exposing peacekeepers to risk constitutes a serious violation of Security Council Resolution 1701 and jeopardizes the stability we are all striving to preserve,” it said.
UNIFIL asked the Israeli occupation army to cease firing throughout the cease-fire monitoring committee meeting.
The incident came hours after the UN force reported that an Israeli drone dropped a hand grenade near one of its patrols in southern Lebanon, holding the Israeli military responsible for endangering its personnel and civilians.
