UN Security Council convenes emergency session over U.S. military action in Venezuela

NEW YORK, Jan. 05 (YPA) – The United Nations Security Council is meeting this Monday to discuss the fallout from a rapid U.S. special forces operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.

The 15-member Council convenes amid sharp international polarization. Russia and China have spearheaded the condemnation, accusing Washington of a “blatant violation” of international law and state sovereignty.

Meanwhile, U.S. allies—many of whom were long-standing critics of Maduro—have displayed notable reserve, stopping short of full condemnation regarding the use of military force.

International Reactions and Warnings

A spokesperson for United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the UN chief views the American operation as a “dangerous precedent,” raising alarms over the long-term implications for global order.

Beijing has taken a firm position, demanding Maduro’s immediate release. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian described the act as a “serious infringement” on Venezuela’s sovereignty that threatens the peace and security of Latin America and the Caribbean. Lin Jian emphasized that regardless of shifting global dynamics, China remains a “loyal partner” to Latin American nations, advocating for equality and mutual benefit without seeking spheres of influence.

Moscow accused Washington of disregarding international norms, stressing the need to respect the Venezuelan people’s right to self-determination.

Political circles are awaiting the outcome of the meeting of the 15 member states, amid escalating tensions that could push the region towards a state of security chaos, and the possibility of a resolution calling for calm or the return of constitutional order in Caracas.
