Tearing Social Fabric in Shabwa, Eastern Governorates: Systematic Chaos to Serve Foreign Agendas

SANAA, Dec. 16 (YPA) – Shabwah Governorate, along with other governorates under the control of the Saudi-led coalition in southern and eastern Yemen, faces a dangerous turning point characterized by a systematic targeting of its social fabric and tribal cohesion.

Observers view this policy as a calculated move to facilitate the influence of foreign powers in regions rich in natural resources.

From Aden to Shabwa: The Evolution of Chaos

Security chaos is no longer confined to the assassinations witnessed in Aden city since 2016—which claimed the lives of over 200 military and religious figures. Instead, it has clearly transitioned to Shabwa through the fueling of tribal conflicts.

The field reality indicates that the struggle between factions loyal to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and the Islah Party has negatively impacted social peace. Tribal energies are being depleted in side-battles that serve foreign agendas, while local leaderships maintain a “spectator” stance toward the unfolding events.

The “Bahaj” Incident: Sounding the Alarm

The execution of the youth “Amin Nasser Bahaj” in Bayhan district, stemming from a tribal vendetta outside the framework of the law, has sparked widespread shock. It serves as a grave indicator of the absence of state authority and the judiciary.

This incident, followed by violent armed clashes between the Al-Bahaj and Al-Soud tribes using medium weaponry, has exposed a deliberate security vacuum. This environment fosters a “law of the jungle” culture, undermining authentic customs and traditions.

Institutional and Security Comparison

While local authorities loyal to the Saudi-led Coalition are mired in corruption and the pursuit of oil and real estate deals, the report highlights a fundamental difference in managing tribal affairs. It notes that the Sanaa government has succeeded in resolving hundreds of chronic blood feud cases and strengthening community cohesion. Conversely, districts in Shabwa are being emptied of legal authority, leaving citizens to face a bloody fate alone.

Expansion of Violations: Hadramout and Mahra

This policy has not been restricted to Shabwa but has recently extended to Hadramout and Mahra governorates. Since early December, rights reports have documented gross violations coinciding with the movement of armed factions, including:

  • 4,071 gross violations within only two weeks.
  • 35 direct killings and 7 executions of prisoners.
  • 268 cases of arbitrary kidnapping and raids on hundreds of homes and shops.
  • Forced displacement of approximately 3,500 people, including families who have resided in the region for decades.

Conclusion: Role-Swapping and Resource Looting

The strategy of drowning the eastern and southern governorates in security and social chaos primarily serves the “role-swapping” dynamic between Riyadh and Abu Dhabi. This destructive project aims to suppress a unified social consciousness, thereby ensuring the continued looting of natural resources and the establishment of foreign military bases, free from any organized popular resistance that might obstruct these agendas in the future.
