GAZA, Oct. 10 (YPA) – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) welcomed on Thursday the ceasefire agreement between the Israeli occupation and Palestinian resistance factions in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement on X, the UNRWA’s Director-General Philippe Lazzarini described the agreement as a “great relief” after two years of aggression that left widespread destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
The statement affirmed its full readiness to deliver urgent humanitarian aid in sufficient quantities to meet the needs of the Gaza Strip’s population in the coming period.
Lazzarini said, “UNRWA has food, medicine, and essential supplies in Gaza, and we have enough to feed the entire population for the next three months.”
This position comes hours after US President Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between the two sides, based on a 20-point peace plan he presented last month. The plan stipulates a gradual withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from the Gaza Strip in exchange for the release of approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, in exchange for the release of Israeli prisoners held by Palestinian resistance.
Lazzarini said the agreement represents “a real breakthrough for people who have suffered bombardment, displacement, and loss for two years,” praising the anticipated return of Palestinian prisoners and detainees to their families after a long period of suffering.
The UNRWA Director-General emphasized that the Agency’s staff, including approximately 12,000 employees in Gaza, would play a key role in implementing the agreement, particularly in providing vital services such as healthcare and education.
He added, “More than 660,000 children are eagerly awaiting their return to school, and UNRWA teachers are ready to welcome them back.”
Despite repeated criticism of the Israeli government, which previously accused the agency of being “infiltrated by Hamas elements,” Lazzarini affirmed that UNRWA would be an indispensable humanitarian partner in reconstruction and relief efforts, calling on all UN member states to continue supporting the agency financially and logistically during the coming critical period.
He concluded his statement by emphasizing that UNRWA to be committed to continuing its humanitarian work in Gaza, and that implementing the ceasefire represents a last chance to save lives and restore hope to millions of civilians exhausted by war, famine, and deprivation.
