UN Commissioner Albanese: The ceasefire is positive, but Israel must be held accountable

SANAA, Oct. 09 (YPA) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, welcomed the ceasefire in Gaza and called for accountability and justice to ensure it translates into lasting peace.

High Commissioner Francesca Albanese issued a written statement regarding the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

Albanese stated that she welcomed the ceasefire, saying: “But this time, there is an urgent need for change. First and foremost, it must be respected, because Israel did not comply with the terms of the ceasefire last time.”

Albanese emphasized the need to take the following steps to achieve lasting peace: “The release of all Israeli and Palestinian detainees. Unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the region. Ending the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine and the apartheid regime. Perpetrators of genocide must be held accountable before international law.”
