HADRAMOT, July 29 (YPA) – Dozens of young people in Mukalla city of Hadramout province set up tents on Tuesday in a protest rally against the lack of electricity and the deterioration of basic services.
Human rights activist in the city affirmed that setting up protest tents in the Salam neighborhood came amid calls for action in the coming hours to take over the Republican Palace, which is controlled by UAE-backed leaders.
The activists stated that the protesters were expected to escalate toward the formation of a local administration for Mukalla, which has been suffering from a near-total vacuum of local authorities, with most of them leaving the city for unknown destinations.
The escalation came after a bloody night in which protesters were shot, killing one and wounding another, by members loyal to the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC).
Earlier, the protesters had stormed the electricity company building and shut down the oil port in protest against power outages caused by a fuel shortage for generating stations.
