Sanaa condemns UN special envoy’s bias

SANAA, July 12 (YPA) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in Sanaa has condemned the bias shown by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Yemen in his recent statement regarding the Red Sea situation.

In its statement, the Ministry asserted that the envoy’s remarks reflect a clear lack of neutrality, as they completely ignored the root causes of the escalation—namely, the Zionist entity’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, witnessed by both the UN and the international community, which have remained inactive.

The Ministry criticized the statement for lacking balance and impartiality, noting that it failed to express concern over the continuous Zionist aggression against Yemen, including attacks on vital civilian infrastructure. It emphasized that the envoy should have instead called on the Zionist entity to cease such violations.

The Ministry pointed out that the envoy’s comments came just one day after his monthly Security Council briefing, in which he also failed to mention the attacks on Yemen—despite their direct targeting of civilians and civilian sites.

This persistent bias, the Ministry said, undermines Sanaa’s ability to engage with the envoy, whose role requires impartiality and maintaining equal distance from all parties in the conflict.

Reaffirming its commitment to maritime safety in the Red Sea, the Ministry clarified that Yemen’s naval blockade is narrowly focused on Israeli-linked shipping and was implemented only after the UN and international community failed for over 21 months to end the siege on Gaza or stop the genocide.

The Ministry explained that the blockade’s aim is to pressure the Zionist entity to halt its aggression, lift the Gaza blockade, and allow humanitarian aid to reach a starving population. Yemen suspended its operations when a ceasefire was reached, but resumed them after Israel violated the agreement.

It also reminded the envoy that Sanaa refrained from such maritime actions for years, despite enduring a brutal war and siege since March 26, 2015.

The Ministry affirmed that Yemen’s support for the Palestinian people stems from a religious, humanitarian, and moral commitment, consistent with international humanitarian law and the 1949 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

It reiterated Yemen’s principled and unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and urged the Special Envoy to fulfill his mandate by working toward a political settlement in Yemen and alleviating the humanitarian crisis now in its tenth year.
