Guterres calls for probe into killings of Palestinians near aid distribution center

GENEVA, June 03 (YPA) -UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Monday for an independent investigation into the killing of dozens of Palestinians near a US-backed aid center in Gaza after rescuers blamed the deaths on Israeli fire and the military denied any involvement.

“I am appalled by the reports of Palestinians killed and injured while seeking aid in Gaza yesterday. It is unacceptable that Palestinians are risking their lives for food,” Guterres said in a statement.

“I call for an immediate and independent investigation into these events and for perpetrators to be held accountable.”

Gaza’s civil defense agency said Israeli occupation gunfire killed at least 31 people and wounded 176 near the aid distribution site in the southern city of Rafah.

On Monday, Gaza’s civil defense spokesman Mahmud Bassal described the shooting in Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, as a “massacre.”

He stated that Israeli military  vehicles opened fire at thousands of civilians who had headed early Sunday to the site of US aid distribution west of Rafah.
