Spain approves arms embargo on Israeli occupation

MADRID, May 21 (YPA) – The Spanish Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of a law banning arms sales to the Israeli occupation against the backdrop of the Israeli aggression against Gaza.

The Spanish ban included “the sale of any weapons to the occupation, as well as a ban on equipment, helmets, and armor that could play a role in that war.”

With the exception of the right-wing Popular Party and the right-wing Vox party, all Spanish political parties approved the law, which was submitted by “the Sumar coalition,” a member of the coalition government, as well as the opposition parties, Podemos and the Republican Left of Catalonia.

In press statements, Sumar parliamentary spokesperson Verónica Martinez said, “Spain does not cooperate with any country that commits genocide or crimes.” Podemos leader Ione Belarra called for a ministerial meeting to issue an official decision banning arms sales to Israel.

Meanwhile, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles stated that “arms trade with Israel has been suspended since October 7, 2023.”
