German Foreign Ministry warns: ISIS still poses widespread threat in Syria

SANAA, May 01 (YPA) – The German Foreign Ministry warned of the continued threat posed by the terrorist organization ISIS within Syrian territory, stressing that the organization still retains offensive capabilities that enable it to launch operations nationwide, especially in the northeast.

In an official statement issued last Tuesday, the ministry indicated that “ISIS remains active in Syria,” warning German citizens against traveling there due to serious security risks, primarily potential attacks by the organization, in addition to the presence of mines and unexploded ordnance in buildings and abandoned lands, which poses a direct threat to the lives of civilians.

The statement also noted that the behavior of members of the Syrian security services is unpredictable, adding another layer of risk to any foreign presence, including German citizens.

The German Foreign Ministry confirmed that its embassy in Damascus remains closed to visitors, and that consular services provided to German citizens in Syria are limited to extreme emergencies only, given the unstable security environment.

This warning came hours after ISIS members carried out two double attacks targeting positions belonging to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the Hasakah countryside in the northeastern part of the country, in a new escalation that confirms the increasing pace of the organization’s activity in areas previously described as semi-safe.
