Baghaei: You cannot impose a blockade on Yemen and expect it to safeguard shipping

TEHRAN, Sept. 14 (YPA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said on Monday that the blockade imposed on Yemen is unjust, stressing that a country cannot be subjected to a naval blockade while simultaneously being expected to safeguard and monitor international maritime navigation.

According to Fars News Agency, Baghaei made the remarks during his weekly press conference in response to a question about allegations that Iran is interfering in Yemen’s internal affairs.

He said that clearly expressing Iran’s position should not be interpreted as interference in Yemen’s internal affairs.

“Yemenis make decisions for themselves and by themselves. Ansarullah is an independent Yemeni party and makes its decisions based on its own interests and benefits. However, you cannot analyze current developments or express an opinion on them without taking the background of the issue into account,” Baghaei said.

“There has been an unjust blockade on Yemen. Yemenis have made many efforts to secure their rights and dignity, but their demands have not been met,” he added.

“Over the past three years, Yemenis have repeatedly come under attacks by the United States and the Israeli entity. The principled position of Yemenis on the genocide in Palestine and Israel’s efforts to dominate Lebanon, Syria and elsewhere has shown that Yemenis are free people and that the issues of the Muslim community and humanitarian causes matter to them,” Baghaei said.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman stressed that maritime security should be ensured for everyone and that all parties should be able to benefit from freedom of navigation.

“You cannot impose a naval blockade on a country and, at the same time, expect it to act as a guardian and monitor of maritime navigation,” he said.
