ADDIS ABABA, Jan. 28 (YPA) – Thousands of Muslims have staged on Monday a protest rally in the Ethiopian city of Mekelle against a decision to ban female students wearing the hijab from attending classes in Axum schools.
Several schools in the region have refused to comply with court orders issued by the Tigray Regional Education Office, which allow Muslim students to wear the hijab in classrooms.
According to the Addis Standard newspaper, the Tigray Islamic Affairs Council organized a protest march under the slogan “We will continue to teach with the hijab,” demanding that schools comply with the instructions and respect the culture.
Previously, the Axum Regional Court had suspended the order banning the hijab on Muslim students, and summoned five schools to respond to the charges. However, many schools did not comply with this decision.
