WORLD, Nov. 15 (YPA) – Amnesty International reported that French-manufactured military technology incorporated into armored personnel carriers (APCs) made by the United Arab Emirates is being used in Sudan’s civil war, a likely violation of a United Nations arms embargo.
In a report released on Thursday, Amnesty International identified the presence of several UAE-made Nimr Ajban APCs [armoured personnel carriers] on the ground throughout Sudan, after verifying pictures shared on social media showing the vehicles captured or destroyed by the Sudanese army.
The APCs, known as Nimr Ajban, are fitted with the Galix System, made by Lacroix Defense and co-designed with Nexter, now known as KNDS France. The system defends against close-range attacks by deploying decoys, smoke and projectiles.
Amnesty said it had verified social media images showing destroyed or captured Nimr Ajban APCs with the Galix System visible.
It said any use of this technology in Darfur would breach the UN arms embargo, which prohibits the supply of military equipment to the region.
The system’s presence in that region would likely mean a violation of the UN’s arms embargo, and therefore put the RSF – and companies involved – at risk of further international sanctions.
