LONDON, Aug. 09 (YPA) – A wave of arrests was carried out on Saturday in the British capital London during the largest pro-Palestine Action protest, which has been designated a banned terrorist organization.
The London Metropolitan Police announced that it enhances its security presence in anticipation of expected demonstrations over the weekend.
Hundreds of protesters gathered in Parliament Square in a protest march, which was organized by the Defend Our Juries movement, despite strict police warnings.
The participants waved Palestinian flags and banners supporting Palestine Action, which is now punishable by up to 14 years in prison under the Terrorism Act 2000.
The British Home Office clarified that the ban did not aim to restrict freedom of expression or demonstration regarding the Palestinian cause, but rather targets the group’s activities, which the government considers to be outside the scope of peaceful protest.
This development came amid escalating tensions over Middle Eastern issues and their impact on the British scene, renewing debate over security policies and civil liberties.
