SANAA, Oct. 16 (YPA) – The World Bank has joined the United Nations in warning of rising food insecurity in Yemen during the rest of this year.
The number of those affected has now exceeded one million people, according to a report by the bank.
The bank said that Yemen has seen a 6% increase in the number of people facing high levels of acute food insecurity this year compared to the previous year.
The report stated that this increase is due to a number of factors, including the escalation of conflict and the exacerbation of climate change such as drought and floods.
According to the World Bank report, the deterioration of the value of the local currency and the increase in fuel costs have made obtaining food more difficult, especially in areas under the control of the government loyal to the Saudi-led coalition.
The report expected that 24% of the Yemeni population would face high levels of acute food insecurity during the second half of this year, as a result of the ongoing conflict, lack of job opportunities, and the effects of increased climate change.
