Russia accuses west of adopting double standards regarding UN personnel in Yemen, Gaza, Lebanon

WORLD. Oct. 16 (YPA) -The Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, criticized the West for its double standards, highlighting its focus on the detention of UN staff in Yemen while neglecting the deaths of many of them at the hands of Israeli forces in Gaza and Lebanon.

During a UN Security Council meeting on Tuesday, Nebenzya stated, “Western officials show a double standard when they ‘sound the alarm’ over the detention of UN staff in Yemen, while simultaneously ignoring the killing of dozens of UN personnel in Gaza under Israeli attacks and the ongoing assaults on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.”

“It is important to avoid double standards. The desire of certain western countries to sound an alarm about the problems of UN personnel in Yemen is in stark contrast to their reaction – or, rather, almost complete absence of reaction – to the deaths of dozens of UN staff in Gaza as the result of Israeli strikes, and to regular attacks by the IDF on the UNIFIL peacekeepers, who nonetheless continue to discharge their duty,” he told the UN Security Council briefing on Yemen.

Nebenzya emphasized the importance of Western representatives extending  their principled approach to the situation around UNRWA, which the Israeli authorities are seeking to squeeze out of Palestinian territory.

He called on the Council members not to allow such egregious and blatant double standards.
