UN: War in Sudan has displaced over three million people

WORLD, July 13 (YPA) – The United Nations announced on Wednesday that more than three million people have been displaced by the armed conflict in Sudan.

More than 2.4 million people have fled their homes to safer areas inside the country, according to the International Organization for Migration. Around 738,000 others crossed into neighboring countries, the agency said.

Safa Msehli, a spokeswoman for the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Geneva, told AFP that more than three million people had fled their homes because of the conflict.

IOM figures showed that more than 2.4 million people were now displaced within Sudan, while nearly 724,000 have escaped across the country’s borders, in a continuously increasing stream.

“This is more than a figure, however: these are people who have been uprooted, fleeing for their lives,” Msehli said, appealing for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

“We need the international community’s sustained support to provide aid and protection to those affected by the conflict,” she said.

Since April 15, Sudan has entered a spiral of battles between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, with which all attempts to calm down failed and increased the suffering of the population of the country, which was considered one of the poorest in the world even before the war.
