17 killed in landmine explosion in central Afghanistan

SANAA, Sept. 29 (YPA) – Afghan authorities announced on Tuesday that a number of people were killed and injured after a mine exploded in Daikundi state, in the center of the country.
A spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, Tariq Aryan, published on his official Twitter page a news that “a mine planted by Taliban terrorists in Dasht Sulaymanabad area in Kargan district of Daikundi state caused 17 deaths.”

In turn, Afghan media indicated that ambulances rushed to the scene and treated the injured.

Among the victims are many women and children, according to the chief of police.

The police chief said the victims were traveling to the mountainous region, 290 km west of the capital, Kabul.

Militants in Afghanistan use improvised explosive devices (IEDs) as roadside bombs and landmines to target security forces, but lethal weapons are also causing civilian casualties.

According to the reports of the United Nations mission, more than 800 civilians were killed and more than 2,330 others were injured in IED explosions in 2019 in Afghanistan.
