20 tons of smuggled drugs destroyed in Sanaa

SANAA, April 25 (YPA) – The Supreme Board of Drugs and Medical Appliances destroyed 20 tons of contraband drugs seized in a number of ports, in addition to confiscating cargo of 10 trucks by the Medicine Control Department, during the past two years.

“The import of medicines decreased because of the aggression and siege imposed on Yemen for the fifth consecutive year,” said Dr. Mohammed al-Madani, chairman of the supreme board of drugs and medical appliances.

Dr. al-Madani indicated that the import value of medicines reached more than 400 million dollars per year through the public and private sectors and organizations.

He explained that the Board had established a department of medical stocks in the control department and worked on finding alternatives to many products of pharmaceutical companies in cooperation with importers.

“The Board has taken a number of measures to raise the level of awareness among citizens in the field of community control to avoid the use of smuggled medicines,” Dr. al-Madani added.

He assured that the pharmaceutical market in Yemen would witness a significant improvement in the pharmaceutical industry through encouraging local industries.
