The Guardian: Europe is unable to stop Gaza war due to ‘racism’ and its complicity with the occupation

WORLD, Aug. 19 (YPA) – Commentator on EU affairs Shada Islam stated that the European Union’s stance on the ongoing war in Gaza can be summed up in one word: “racism.”

This came in an article she wrote in The Guardian on Tuesday, titled ” There’s a word for the EU’s inaction over Gaza: racism”

Shada Islam criticized EU leaders for their failure to act decisively against “Israel’s” war on Gaza.

She pointed out that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and her team are facing mounting criticism over the controversial tariff agreement between the European Union and the United States, signed last July, as well as for their failure to take comparable accountability measures against the Israeli occupation in light of the crimes committed in Gaza

Islam added that the European Union possesses numerous sanctions and legal tools that it could activate but refuses to do so.

She noted that the EU remains the largest trading partner of the Israeli occupation, accounting for approximately 32% of its total trade in 2024.

Islam pointed out that attempts by European leaders and foreign ministers to suspend the EU-“Israel” Association Agreement, have failed to secure the majority needed, despite pressure from Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia, as well as warnings from human rights experts about Israel’s violations of its obligations under the agreement.

The writer believes that there is an urgent need for calls to hold the European Union accountable for its complicity in what she described as the “genocide” being perpetrated by the Israeli occupation in Gaza. She asserted that European silence encourages the continuation of these violations.
