SANAA – The United Arab Emirates’ occupation forces on Tuesday handed over the southern Yemeni al-Anad Air Base to General Tareq Mohammed Abdullah Saleh, the nephew of slain Yemeni former president Saleh, according to Yemeni military sources familiar with the situation.
The base is in Lahj province, in the southern part of Yemen.
The move triggered a large-scale discontent among the southerners.
The move came a day after a secret meeting between General Tareq and commanders of the UAE forces in the base, in which both agreed to form new brigades to contain soldiers from the Republican Guards, which were under control of Saleh before he was forced to step down in 2012, according to the sources.
The UAE aimed to use General Tareq and the brigades in the fight against the Yemeni army, which controls most of the north.
