Greece assumes UN Security Council presidency, succeeding France

NEW YORK, Oct. 01 (YPA) – Greece officially assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council for October on Thursday, succeeding France.

Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Aglaia Balta, will hold a press conference Thursday afternoon to brief accredited journalists on the Council’s program of work, following its formal adoption in a morning session.

The Security Council comprises 15 member states, each holding one vote. These include five permanent, veto-wielding members—China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States—and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly based on regional distribution. Beside Greece, the current non-permanent members are Bahrain, Colombia, Denmark, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia, Liberia, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia.

The Security Council is one of six principal organs of the United Nations, alongside the General Assembly, the Secretariat, the International Court of Justice, the Economic and Social Council, and the Trusteeship Council, which currently suspended operations.
