DHAMAR, Oct. 01 (YPA) – The Seismological and Volcanological Observatory Center recorded two earthquakes on Thursday, one east of the Gulf of Aden and the other in Abyan Governorate in southern Yemen.
According to the center, a 3.5-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale struck the area east of the Gulf of Aden at a depth of 10 kilometers at 8:11 p.m. yesterday. Meanwhile, the center’s monitoring stations registered a minor 2.8-magnitude earthquake northeast of Ahwar District in Abyan Governorate at 2:53 a.m. today, at a depth of 11 kilometers.
The center noted that the minor seismic activity recorded across certain Yemeni regions stems from stress accumulation within continental crustal rocks. It added that this activity is influenced by seismic dynamics along the African Plate, alongside the continuous tectonic spreading of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and the ongoing movement of the Arabian Plate away from the African Plate.
