Sanaa threatens full Red Sea blockade on Saudi oil shipping after attack near Yanbu

SANAA, Aug. 06 (YPA) – A military statement issued by Sanaa forces regarding the targeting of the Saudi oil tanker ‘Wafa’ off the port of Yanbu marks a fundamental shift in the nature of the maritime conflict.

The announcement signals the entry into a new strategic phase involving a complete closure of the Red Sea to Saudi oil traffic and the imposition of a comprehensive maritime blockade across the entire theater of operations.

The operational expansion into the northern Red Sea demonstrates the breakdown of “safe havens” previously relied upon by Riyadh.

Attempts by Saudi Arabia to bypass the existing blockade at the southern Bab al-Mandab Strait by rerouting shipping lines and increasing shipments from northwestern ports were challenged by the strike on the Wafa.

The incident indicates that Sanaa possesses long-range reconnaissance and tracking capabilities covering the entire Red Sea.

According to the statement, 8 oil tankers have been targeted and 29 others forced to turn back. These operational details point to a strategy aimed at imposing an economic blockade on Saudi oil exports. Disruption near Yanbu effectively impairs export capabilities via western ports and restricts Saudi oil transit toward the Suez Canal and international markets.

Western reports indicate growing Saudi concerns regarding direct military confrontation, leaving limited operational options in response to the escalation.

 The developments present Riyadh with a complex choice between accepting disruptions to its Red Sea oil shipping or engaging in a high-risk military escalation.
