Record US air defense deal aims at replenishing depleted stockpiles

WASHINGTON, July 30 (YPA) – The US Department of Defense has awarded “Lockheed Martin” company a landmark contract valued at up to $58.62 billion for the production of “Patriot” interceptor missiles, aimed at addressing shrinking American weapons stockpiles amid ongoing global conflicts.

The multi-year agreement expands a previous one-year, $4.7 billion deal signed in April into a seven-year procurement framework covering fiscal years 2026 through 2032. The move comes as heavy arms supply to allies and recent operational consumption in Iran have raised concerns regarding the availability of critical air defense assets and precision-guided munitions.

Under the contract, Lockheed Martin plans to triple its production capacity for PAC-3 MSE missiles by the end of 2030, eventually ramping up total PAC-3 interceptor output to 2,000 units annually. The defense contractor also committed to investing between $8 billion and $9 billion through 2030 to modernize more than 20 US facilities, including key manufacturing centers in Arkansas and Alabama.

The Pentagon continues to push defense contractors to accelerate manufacturing timelines while managing capital allocation under executive directives issued by President Donald Trump’s administration. Similar framework agreements have been established with Raytheon parent RTX to scale Tomahawk cruise missile production from approximately 60 per year to 1,000 units annually.
