BEIRUT, June 09 (YPA) – Lebanese Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri reaffirmed his stance calling for a full and comprehensive ceasefire, rejecting any partial or conditional arrangements that do not encompass all land, sea, and air fronts.
According to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, Berri’s response to US proposals emphasized two core demands:
- An immediate and unconditional halt to Israeli military operations across land, sea, and air, including bulldozing and demolition activities in the south.
- Any withdrawal of “Hezbollah” forces from the South Litani region must be synchronized with the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from occupied Lebanese territories.
Sources told the newspaper that Berri was “comfortable with the Iranian context” and remains convinced that Lebanon must leverage the Islamabad negotiation table to pressure “Israel” and improve its negotiating position.
Meanwhile, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun revealed on Monday that negotiations are currently underway to reach a non-aggression agreement between Lebanon and “Israel.” He emphasized that he would not meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu before a final agreement is reached.
In statements to US media, Aoun said, “Lebanon is sending a clear message to the Israeli government that a military solution will never provide security for northern Israel,” stressing the necessity of resorting to political and diplomatic solutions to resolve ongoing conflicts.
A ceasefire between Lebanon and Israeli occupation took effect after midnight on April 17, while Israeli occupation forces remain stationed deep within southern Lebanon. Although the truce largely halted airstrikes on Beirut and its suburbs, it has failed to stop the fighting in southern Lebanon between Israel and “Hezbollah.”
