Scores protest opening of new Israeli embassy in Fiji

SUVA, June 04 (YPA) – Dozens of activists gathered outside the headquarters of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) in the capital, Suva, to protest the opening of a new Israeli embassy in the country.

According to media sources, the peaceful demonstration saw a number of male and female activists voicing their rejection of the diplomatic move, raising solidarity slogans and banners during the rally.

Sources reported that police forces deployed around the protest site from its outset, imposing restrictions on the demonstration. Citing the Public Order Act to restrict the right to assemble, authorities forced participants to remove several banners.

Security forces specifically targeted slogans calling for freedom “from the river to the sea.” Despite the participation of women and children, authorities deemed the event a “threat to public order,” according to their assessment.

The protest follows an official visit on Tuesday by Israeli occupation Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who inaugurated the embassy in the Pacific island nation alongside Fijian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
