Cyprus: MP warns of Israeli “takeover” of island through land purchases

NICOSIA, May 12 (YPA) – A member of parliament in Greek Cyprus has warned of an Israeli plan to take over the island by buying real estate and land, according to local media.

The Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot reported on Monday that Cypriot Member of the European Parliament Phidias Panayiotou said on Sunday that “Israel is taking over (Greek) Cyprus through aggressive expansion in real estate purchases and large-scale land development projects.”

The Israeli ambassador, Oren Anolik, responded in a post on the platform of the American company “X”, claiming: “We have recently noticed attempts to portray Israeli investments and presence in (Greek) Cyprus in a negative and threatening manner,” according to his claims.

He acknowledged that “thousands of Zionist families, businessmen and professionals have chosen Cyprus as their second home,” under the pretext of “their sincere love and appreciation for the island and its culture.”
