TEHRAN, April 28 (YPA) – Iran’s representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, stated on Monday that Iran is “not bound” by the UN Law of the Sea and defended his country’s maritime actions in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement, Iravani argued that these measures are necessary to balance coastal security with safe navigation in a “highly volatile” environment.
He also accused some international members of displaying “double standards” by ignoring the “maritime blockade” imposed by the United States.
The representative held the United States and its supporters fully responsible for any disruption to navigation in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, noting that Washington’s destabilizing actions are the main cause of the security tensions in the region.
He pointed out that the United States is imposing an illegal naval blockade and detaining Iranian ships, considering these practices as a direct threat to maritime security and a clear violation of international law.
The Iranian delegate reiterated that Iran has taken the necessary measures to ensure the safety of navigation and to prevent the strait from being used for hostile military purposes, stressing that the United States is the party threatening global maritime security, not Tehran.
