EU: Attacks against Iran lack legal basis; union will not engage in conflict

BRUSSELS, March 20 (YPA) –  European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs, “Kallas,” stated that the attacks carried out by the United States and “Israel” against Iran lack a legitimate basis under international law, affirming that EU member states will not be drawn into the military conflict.

Speaking ahead of an EU summit in Brussels, Kallas clarified that the legal conditions for the use of force—namely self-defense or a UN Security Council mandate—are not met in the current situation. She emphasized that the EU’s primary objective is “ending the war, not escalating it” through diplomatic channels.

Regarding maritime security, Kallas highlighted ongoing international cooperation to secure the Strait of Hormuz, while ruling out the expansion of “Operation Aspides” to cover the area. She concluded by warning that a prolonged conflict threatens global stability and adversely impacts other international crises, most notably the situation in Ukraine.
