LONDON, March 12 (YPA) – British authorities have Sparked a political and legal debate after deciding to restrict the upcoming Al-Quds Day march in London, converting it from a mobile procession to a stationary protest.
The Home Office approved the Metropolitan Police’s request to impose these restrictions, citing the need to prevent “serious public disorder.”
While organizers, including Zahir Birawi of the EuroPal Forum, noted that the event has been held peacefully for four decades, officials pointed to heightened regional tensions and the current political climate surrounding the Gaza war as primary factors for the decision.
The authorities based their decision on the need to avoid any friction or disturbances in light of the current tensions.
The decision comes amid sharp polarization related to the repercussions of the war in Gaza, and amid pressure from groups demanding restrictions on pro-Palestinian activities.
The measure has reopened the public debate in Britain about the balance between maintaining public safety and ensuring the right to peaceful protest on sensitive international issues.
