India erupts in protests over US trade agreement

NEW DELHI, Feb. 13 (YPA) – Major trade unions and farmers’ groups in India staged a nationwide strike on Thursday in protest against an interim trade agreement with the United States, arguing that it harms the interests of farmers, small businesses, and workers.

Opposition lawmakers also urged the government in parliament to cancel the deal, criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chanting slogans against him, according to The Associated Press.

The one-day strike caused partial disruptions to public services and industrial operations, reflecting growing opposition to Modi’s economic reform agenda and highlighting the political challenges facing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of key state elections later this year.
