‘Hadramout National Council’ signals potential breakup of Yemen

HADRAMOUT, Jan. 25 (YPA) -Signs of a Saudi plan to dismantle and fragment Yemen are becoming increasingly evident through Riyadh’s direct sponsorship of the so-called “Hadramout National Council.”

The council held a meeting on Saturday in Seiyun, during which a different national anthem was played—one that even differed from the separatist anthem aired recently at the “Southern–Southern Dialogue” meeting held in Riyadh.

The meeting’s outcomes stated that Hadramout’s political path could be either a fully autonomous region within a federal Yemen or an independent Hadrami state in the event of any future political division.

Analysts say this indicates ambitions beyond a simple north–south split, pointing instead toward the fragmentation of Yemen into multiple smaller entities, with Hadramout potentially becoming the first of these statelets.

Observers add that similar movements may emerge in other southern governorates, with demands mirroring those of the Hadramout Council, including calls for independent states in eastern Yemen—territories increasingly under Saudi influence following the sidelining of the UAE and its allied armed factions.
