Canadian rights organization calls for combating Islamophobia after driver threatened with knife

OTTAWA, Dec. 17 (YPA) – An Islamic rights organization active in the Canadian province of Quebec has called for concrete steps to combat Islamophobia after an Uber driver was threatened with a knife by a passenger.

In a statement published on X on Wednesday, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) said, regarding the incident that occurred on December 6, that a passenger asked the Muslim Uber driver to disclose his religious beliefs and then threatened him with a knife.

The statement indicated that the attack was thwarted thanks to the intervention of another passenger in the car, which saved the driver from imminent danger, noting that warnings have been repeatedly issued in Quebec about the dangers of anti-Muslim rhetoric fueled by some political and media discussions.

“Enough is enough. No one in Quebec should live in fear of death because of their religion. We call on politicians and leaders to strongly condemn this anti-Muslim attack and take concrete steps to stand against this hatred across the country,” the statement added.

It also reported that the relevant parties and law enforcement have been contacted, and that work is underway to ensure that the person who threatened the driver is held accountable.
