HODEIDA, Nov. 27 (YPA) – Hodeida governorate received 48 Yemeni fishermen on Thursday, who had been detained by Eritrean authorities for 12 days.
The returning fishermen said during a symbolic reception held at Al Khawbah port in the coastal district of Al Luhayyah that some of them had been subjected to torture, including beatings, and forced labor, amidst harsh conditions that included starvation and mistreatment during their detention in the Eritrean navy’s prison in the Jalbub area.
The fishermen added that they had been carrying out their usual fishing activities in Yemeni territorial waters on board three “jalbah”-type boats in different locations when Eritrean navy patrols intercepted them at gunpoint and took them to their prisons.
They reported that after they spent 12 days in captivity and the accompanying arbitrary practices, the Eritrean authorities confiscated two of their three boats with all their equipment, fishing gear, and personal belongings, before releasing them on one boat that took them to Al Khawbah fishing port.
